How Do You Measure a Window Screen?
How Do You Measure a Window Screen?
Getting the right fit for a replacement window screen starts with one thing: an accurate measurement. Measure wrong and your new screen will be too loose, too tight, or just won’t fit at all. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to measuring a window screen correctly.
Tools You’ll Need
- A metal tape measure
- A pen and paper (or your phone)
Step-by-Step: How to Measure a Window Screen
Step 1: Find the Screen Frame (If You Still Have It)
If the old screen is still around — even if it’s damaged — measure the frame itself. This gives you the most accurate size because the frame was made specifically for your window opening.
Measure the outside edge to outside edge of the frame:
- Width: left edge to right edge
- Height: top edge to bottom edge
Step 2: Measure the Window Opening (If You Don’t Have the Screen)
If the screen is missing, measure the window frame channel — the track or groove where the screen sits.
- Measure the width of the opening from the inside of one side channel to the inside of the other.
- Measure the height from the top channel to the bottom channel.
Important: Don’t measure the visible window glass. Measure the full opening including the channel or groove where the screen frame slides in.
Step 3: Measure in Multiple Spots
Windows are rarely perfectly square, especially in older homes. Measure the width at both the top and bottom of the opening. Measure the height on both the left and right sides. Use the smallest measurement to ensure the screen fits without forcing.
Step 4: Record Both Dimensions
Write down Width x Height — always width first. For example: 28" W x 54" H.
Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid
- Measuring the glass only — you need the full opening, including the channel
- Rounding up — screens need to fit snugly; rounding up even half an inch can cause problems
- Measuring once — always double-check both dimensions
- Forgetting screen type — note if it’s a sliding screen, hinged screen, or fixed screen before ordering
What if My Measurements Don’t Match a Standard Size?
Many windows — especially in homes built before the 1990s — won’t match any standard size. In that case, you need a custom-made screen built to your exact dimensions. This is more affordable than most people expect and guarantees a proper fit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you measure a window screen from the inside or outside?
Measure from the outside edges of the screen frame itself, or the inside of the window channel if the screen is missing.
What if my window screen measurements are uneven?
If the width or height varies slightly from top to bottom or side to side, use the smaller measurement to ensure a proper fit.
