How to Measure Tricky Windows for Custom Screens

Why Tricky Windows Cause Fit Problems

Most windows are simple rectangles, but arched tops, radius corners, out-of-square frames, and oversized openings turn a basic screen order into a guessing game. Measuring tricky windows for custom screens the right way prevents the #1 complaint we hear: "the screen fits on one side and gaps on the other."

Tools You Need

  • A rigid steel tape measure (not cloth)
  • A notepad
  • A helper for wide windows
  • A straightedge for checking square

Step 1: Measure the Opening, Not the Old Screen

Old screens shrink, bend, and warp. Always measure the window opening — the channel or lip the screen will sit in. Measure width at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest of the three.

Step 2: Measure Height in Three Places

Measure the height on the left, center, and right. Again, use the smallest dimension. This is critical for out-of-square frames where one side is a quarter inch shorter.

Step 3: Account for the Frame Type

  • Channel/spline frame: measure to the inside of the channel, then subtract about 1/8 inch for fit.
  • Spring-loaded frame: measure the full opening; the spring takes up the slack.
  • Slide-in lip: measure the visible opening minus 1/16 inch per side.

When ordering custom window screens, give the exact opening size and let us apply the deduction — that way we're responsible for the fit.

Step 4: Handle Arched and Radius Windows

For arched windows, you need the width, the leg height (straight sides), and the rise (the height of the arch at center). Lay a straightedge across the bottom of the arch and measure up to the peak. We bend the frame to match.

Step 5: Flag Oversized Openings

Anything wider than 48 inches or taller than 80 inches may need a center bar or heavier frame. Measuring irregular windows means noting these limits so you don't order a screen that sags.

Common Window Measurement Problems

  • Measuring the old screen instead of the opening
  • Using a floppy tape that bends
  • Forgetting to check for square
  • Not noting arch or radius corners
